THE ART CITIES ARE JUST AROUND THE CORNER FROM MECHELEN
Antwerp is just a short drive from Mechelen. The city by the Scheldt is very popular with culture fans and is internationally renowned as the city of Rubens, the diamond world capital and a popular fixture on the international fashion scene. Its diversity is precisely what makes Antwerp such a special city to visit.
Cultural, artistic and mysteriously medieval: this pretty much sums up Bruges. Flemish Primitives such as Jan van Eyck and Hans Memling enjoyed creating art here and you can still see many of their world-famous works in one of the city’s many museums. Don’t forget to sample the pleasures of Burgundian life in one of the many authentic pubs in the city.
Ghent is an interesting cocktail of history, culture and modern city life. The city has several assets including the Mystic Lamb and St. Bavo’s Cathedral, the Light Plan and the Ghent Festivities. Still not sure whether you should go? Did we already mention the stunning architecture, the water and Ghent’s unique joie de vivre?
Brussels knows how to surprise and please people. The European and Belgian capital is renowned for its amazing heritage and creative atmosphere, with the surrealist artist René Magritte as its figurehead. Here you can run into Art Nouveau buildings and famous comic strip figures on every street corner. Brussels’ most famous inhabitant is just one metre tall and is called Manneken Pis.
Mechelen is centrally located, in the heart of Flanders, midway between Brussels and Anwterp. You can get to Mechelen, which has two train stations, in just 11 minutes from Brussels Airport. It is a short drive by car from our neighbouring countries and parking is cheap and even free in the car parks on the city’s fringe. Whether you are travelling by train, car or plane, everyone can easily get to Mechelen.
