Family fun in Mechelen
A FAMILY-FRIENDLY CITY
Paradise for children
Visit the cute baby elephants at Planckendael. At Planckendael, you can roam all the continents. Visit Kai-Mook and her family in Asia. Take a stroll with the penguins on the promenade in America. Australia smells like koala. In Africa, you can gaze into the glowing eyes of the lemurs.
In Technopolis you can land a plane, sleep on a bed of nails or bike along a cable that is suspended five metres above the ground. This science and technology activity centre is a great place for children, as they discover first-hand how things work and learn more about the technology behind items we use every day in over 350 interactive displays. You’ll find yourself often gazing open-mouthed as you find out how things work and have fun with the experiments.
Explore one of Europe’s largest toy collections in the Toy Museum. Here you can see toys from around the world, from the past and present. But visiting the museum involves much more than looking at displays. Try a game of jacks or a spinning top. The children will love it and for you, it will be like a trip down memory lane!
Go walkabout with “Mechelen sends you on your way”, criss-crossing the city with your family! “From Albatros to Zebra” will take you on a fun-filled tour through the city, giving you the inside scoop on the city’s animals. “With wet feet” is an adventurous city walk for water lovers. Children can take the lead thanks to the Big Map, the walking guide is also jam-packed with fun facts for children and adults alike. A fun way for the whole family to get to know the city better.
In Mechelen, we believe in rolling out the red carpet for children. You can conduct your own fountain spectacular near Melaan, run through a labyrinth, or climb up the XXL Opsinjoor and make it to the top first. From the Beguinage to the Palace of Margaret of Austria: there are plenty of places in the city where the whole family can have a fun time on the playing installations. Tired? Then enjoy a nice family meal in a restaurant and spend the night in one of the city’s many child-friendly hotels.
Lace up your boots and head out with your family into the nature around Mechelen. There is plenty of space to run around and play in parks such as the Botanic Garden and Vrijbroek Park. Visiting the petting zoo in Tivoli Park is also a lot of fun after which you can treat your kids to a pancake in the castle restaurant. If you prefer a more action-packed day, head over to the sports and leisure domain De Nekker, just outside the city, where the beach, swimming pool, playing areas and sports fields await you.

Before we went to Planckendael in the afternoon, we explored the city during a scavenger hunt, called “Mechelen sends you on your way”. I learnt a lot more about Mechelen as we played in the city and looked for clues. We had such a cool time!
