There is always something going in Mechelen. Cool pubs, unique shops, artisan products, design shops… Mechelen has it all and what’s more, you’re just a short walk or bike trip away from nature.
The young crowd in Mechelen usually hangs out in Vismarkt. Score a seat on one of the many terraces and enjoy some good people watching. Most people are on their way to the many unique design shops, cool coffee shops or shops in busy Onze-Lieve-Vrouwestraat and the streets around it. Hungry? Pop into one of the nice restaurants in the city centre.
Cool and fun places to see and be seen
“In elke uithoek van de stad hoorde ik de tonen van de beiaard. Toen we over de zaterdagmarkt wandelden, neuriede ik vrolijk mee met de deuntjes van de beiaardier. Geen saaie nummers, maar echt popklassiekers. Herken jij ook ‘Thank you for the music’ van Abba of ‘My way’ van Frank Sinatra? In de namiddag beklommen we trouwens de Sint-Romboutstoren en kon ik de stadsbeiaardier meteen live aan het werk zien!”
Mechelen’s bustling shopping streets are a great place to walk. De Bruul, IJzerenleen, Onze-Lieve-Vrouwestraat and the surrounding streets have plenty to offer, from large chains to small boutiques and several speciality shops. And what’s more, everything is within easy walking distance. Retro, design, artisan products and fun gifts: this city really has something for everyone. Mechelen suits you!
“Our shopping trip to Mechelen couldn’t have gotten any better than this. The free shopping shuttle dropped us off in Grote Markt, in the city centre. We took a stroll through the Saturday market, among the locals who were doing their weekly shop. Then we walked over to Bruul where we were simply unable to resist the fragrance of just-baked waffles. The unique shops, the helpful shop assistants and the cosy atmosphere all made this a great shopping trip."
Why not explore Mechelen from the water? The floating Dijle path winds its way along the charming houses along the river. At night, when the river is at its most beautiful and the city lights gently twinkle, the Dijle path is the perfect place for a surprising walk along the water. Or why not enjoy a relaxing boat or SUP tour on the Inner Dijle?
ON AND ALONG
Mechelen Dijle City
“I don’t particularly like a quiet stroll or sitting still. That’s why the stand up paddling package was perfect for me. Me and my friends paddled down the Dijle on a surfboard. We stopped midway in Vismarkt for drinks, which was amazing! Soon our wives will be going on a shopping trip. My friends and I will try out the City Golf. Hitting a ball in the shadow of St. Rumboldt’s Cathedral? Sounds like loads of fun to me!”
Do you like to alternate a walk around the city with a breath of fresh air? Hop on a bike or enjoy a hike? Mechelen combines the best of both worlds. Winding rivers and lakes encircle our picturesque city. Enjoy the parks and nature areas in and around the city centre, where you’ll run into lots of Mechelen families. Or why not roam around Mechelen’s green fringe? Spend time enjoying nature’s magnificence in astonishingly lovely places such as Vrijbroek Park and Mechels Broek.
“Our children are older so now they can join us on our bike tours. The Gouden Carolus route took us on a tour of the blue-green fringe and the most charming beauty spots outside the city centre. I definitely recommend stopping at the confluence of the Rupel, Nete and Dijle Rivers. There are also plenty of pubs along the way where you can stop for a delicious Gouden Carolus. And if you enjoy a good whiskey now and then, you should definitely check out the De Molenberg distillery”.
